Llangollen

Paddle amongst the Majestic Hills and Beautiful Valleys

Paddle from the historic Llangollen Pavilion to the breathtaking Horseshoe Falls and back

About

The arrival of the AquaPaddle in Llangollen offers paddlers a truly unique experience within a UNESCO World Heritage site. Starting and finishing adjacent to the Llangollen Pavilion, the route takes participants on a serene journey upstream from the Llangollen Basin. This stretch of the canal is particularly special, as the final section towards the majestic Horseshoe Falls is restricted solely to paddle craft, ensuring a peaceful and uninterrupted flow through the stunning Denbighshire landscape.

Steeped in history, Llangollen takes its name from Saint Collen, who established a church on the banks of the River Dee in the 6th century. The town became a focal point of the Romantic movement, famously home to the Ladies of Llangollen at Plas Newydd. The canal itself, an engineering marvel designed by Thomas Telford, was originally built to transport slate and limestone, but today it serves as a gateway for leisure and nature.

Convenience is at the heart of this new location, as the start and finish lines are situated directly next to the Llangollen Pavilion. There is an abundance of parking available on-site, ensuring that you can unload your craft and gear with ease just a short distance from the water’s edge. This dedicated space eliminates the stress of searching for a spot in the busy town centre, allowing you to focus entirely on your morning on the water.

After completing your paddle, you can enjoy a variety of local flavours within easy walking distance of the basin. The town offers a delightful array of independent cafes and traditional tea rooms where you can warm up with a hot drink or a hearty Welsh breakfast. Whether you fancy a quick snack by the canal or a more relaxed sit-down meal overlooking the River Dee, Llangollen’s hospitality is the perfect way to cap off your AquaPaddle experience.
