BlueSpace for Young Carers
Thursday 25 Sep 2025 | by Emma Cleverdon - Surrey Young Carers
I am a Children & Young Persons Coordinator for Surrey Young Carers (part of Action for Carers, Surrey) and work with young carers aged from 5-17 years old. I had an event for 10-11 year old young carers with AquaPaddle on Saturday 20th September. We had 10 young carers join and we all took part in a thorough instruction and safety briefing at the start. We went from Thames Ditton and spent an hour on the River Thames learning how to Paddleboard on a very scenic route passed Hampton Court Palace and under Hampton Court bridge, before we formed two paddleboard snakes and headed back to Thames Ditton. All the young carers thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the chance to have a go at paddleboarding.

It’s very import for our young carers to have time away from their caring roles, meet other young carers and have some fun. It’s essential to our service to be able to offer them interesting and exciting activities that they want to take part in, including this great activity facilitated by AquaPaddle. I received some great feedback following the event.

A Mum said: “Thank you very much for arranging the paddleboarding yesterday. He had a great time, and he loved jumping in at the end! Thanks”
